The Impact of Diabetes in the U.S.
- Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death in the U.S.
- There are 25.8 million people with diabetes (18.8million diagnosed/ 7.0 undiagnosed)
- Annual estimated cost of diabetes is $174 billion - direct and indirect.
- Using fasting glucose levels or A1C levels, 35% of U.S. adults (20yr+) had prediabetes in 2005-2008.
- Applying this to the U.S. population (20+) in 2010 puts the estimate at 79 million Americans with prediabetes.
Disparities - Diagnosed Diabetes
- 7.1% of non-Hispanic whites
- 8.4% of Asian Americans
- 11.8% of Hispanics
- Among Hispanics, rates were 7.6% for both Cubans and for Central and South Americans, 13.3% for Mexican Americans, and 13.8% for Puerto Ricans.
- 12.6% of non-Hispanic blacks

- 66% higher among Hispanics
- Risk of diagnosis was similar for Cubans, Central and South Americans but significantly higher among Mexican Americans (%87)and Puerto Ricans (%94)
